A Flowery Week 9 of Our CSA

2009_0627csa0002

The offerings were smaller this week, with two new entrants.  The new items this week were broccoli and potatoes.

Week 8, now with Ketchup

CSA Week 8, with Ketchup

The selection from the CSA this week included more cabbage, garlic scapes, kale, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and a new entrant that looks kind of like Sputn

CSA Weeks 6 & 7. Homemade Granola and revisiting Oyster Mushrooms.

Week 6 bountyWeek 6 saw more mint, more of the salad mix (which lasts at least a week in the fridge!), garlic scape

Garlic Scape Pesto

We have received a couple of bunches of bunches of Garlic Scapes from our CSA, and this seems to be the most popular thing to do with them. We boiled some of the new Barilla Plus pasta, added this and some cherry tomatoes also from the CSA.

Gacked from here.

Garlic scape pesto

1 pound garlic scapes
1 cup grated parmesan cheese (I used Percorino Romano)
Olive oil (about 1/2 to 1 cup)
Pine nuts if available

CSA Week 5, Extra Cheesy

I arrived at the market early (read 8am) on Saturday as we had a cable guy coming to install a new outlet. I was greeted with a big bag of Kale, more garlic scapes, some huge spring onions, more cherry tomatoes, some herb I have no idea what it is, mint and a special treat from The Swiss Connection Farmstead Cheeses. I was offered an alternative to the cheese as the CSA has information on my dairy allergy, but I accepted it anyway as my wife can eat it. We received a half pound of the gouda-like Flora cheese.

CSA, Week 4, Caffeinated.

The email update from the wonderful folk at the CSA wasn’t received until after I picked up our share this week. I was pleasantly surprised to see a small paper bag from the Bloomington Coffee Roasters. We received about a half a pound of their Good Day blend. I have been meaning to check out their stuff for a while now, and it is pretty decent.

Week Three of Our CSA

This week the added extra was wildflower honey from Hunter's Honey Farm about a 20 minute drive from here.

Our trip into locally grown foods

My wife recently got us interested in slow foods. These are basically foods grown and raised using more traditional farming methods. They also focus on locally produced foods.

The bittersweet sensation of being outbid

You know how it is, you see something on ebay that strikes your interest and bid. Then you research the item elsewhere or even on ebay and find it quite a bit cheaper and hold your breath while until the end of your auction waiting and hoping to be outbid. Checking your new email hoping you get an outbid notice, checking the auction page every once in a while.

Often you'll still be high bidder when there's under an hour to go, then 30 minutes, then 10. You keep hitting reload seeing if someone has outbid you and then, if you're lucky, you'll be outbid. Then for a few minutes you wonder what to do, as you no longer have the auction to check.
