Pastured Proteins

As well as the produce CSA, we decided to buy a half farm share in a local grass-fed meat farm. The half share consists of

  • Eight whole chickens at approximately 4 pounds each.
  • One turkey at approximately 12.5 pounds for Thanksgiving (Broad breasted or heritage).
  • Three pounds of ground lamb or a package of lamb chops.
  • One rabbit.
  • One eight, one quarter or half beef.

We settled on the half share as a trial, and that’s quite a bit of meat. We opted for a quarter beef as well.

The food is distributed throughout the year, when it’s ready. We have already received two chickens, both over 5 pounds, one was frozen and we ate the other. It was quite tasty. When I picked up the chickens on the farm I had a chance to meet with the farmers and chat for a while. They are wonderful people and I look forward to talking to them again in the future.

One of the driving reasons for purchasing the half share is the health benefits of pastured animals on a farm that does not grain feed, use hormones, pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers or pharmaceutical anthelmintics. The levels of omega-3 fatty acids and CLAs in the meat are much higher than grain or corn-finished animals.
