The selection from the CSA this week included more cabbage, garlic scapes, kale, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and a new entrant that looks kind of like Sputnik, a kohlrabi. The kohlrabi is a vegetable we have never tried before, nor had we paid it any attention had we seen it. Apparently it is a member of the same family as cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, etc. We will cook it up and see how it goes.
We ate some of last week’s kale this week, fried it in some local nitrite free bacon grease, it tasted pretty good. We have been using the bacon in salads along with some kind of soft boiled eggs. I make a quick balsamic vinaigrette with EVOO, balsamic vinegar, some Italian spices and some pecorino (sheep milk) Romano cheese.
The special addition this week was from the Localfolks Foods people again, Ketchup without the high-fructose corn syrup that most ketchups contain. It tastes wonderful and the first ingredient is Indiana Tomato Puree. You can’t do much better than that.
It sounds like this may be the last week for garlic scapes, so we will be throwing the remaining scapes into the chopper and make a big batch of garlic scape pesto. YUM!
